About Rosemary Wisdom
My name is Carli Rene Romero. I was borne and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and spent the first ten years of my adulthood in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I love this land deeply. It is Source and Sanctuary for me. The desert is not an easy place to be, but it holds a mystery and a beauty that only those willing to look can see. As a light skinned, mixed womyn, I identify as a Coyote. Coyotes are tricksters and are not always what they appear to be. They are also creatures of the moon and companions to the night.
Rosemary is Romero in Spanish. I resonate so deeply with this plant and feel blessed to carry it with me by name. Rosemary blooms all over New Mexico. It can be brittle and tough, yet has beauty, fragrance and healing embedded in it. My Grandma, aka Abuelita Bag Lady, uses rosemary in limpias, for cleansing and protection. Ancient stories told of the Middle East tell that households with rosemary planted in front are indications of households ran by strong women. I love how straightforward rosemary is. There is a rawness and utility to it's appearance that feels right at home in the high desert. Sometimes it surprises us with indigo blooms, reminding us to express our unique beauty. It is also a plant of memory, and my writing and creations are ways of remembering who I am while inviting others into their own Soulful remembrance.
Outside of my "creative endeavors", I am currently a grad student at UNM, working toward an MA in Educational Leadership. I also work full time as a Youth Empowerment Specialist at New Day Safe Home, a shelter for homeless, juvenile and runaway youth. It is some of the most challenging and most beautiful work I have ever done. New Day intentionally employs the Nurtured Heart Approach, and it has been a blessing to learn more about receiving people where they are at, and seeing their greatness in ways I never thought to look before. Prior to this, I founded and directed a branch of Shakti Rising in Las Cruces, NM from 2013-2016; after leading civic engagement work with Comunidades en Accion y de Fe as a community organizer.. I've published individual articles with Rebelle Society, Cushy, and Journey of the Heart; and published my first book of poetry in August. I love to partner with other creativas from NM who share a love of our land, spirit and people. I have training in Reiki, Ortho-bionomy, Pranic Healing and Health Touch and enjoy the way energy interacts with all systems.
